What started as an experiment quickly became a labor of love during 2011 when VNI helped build yourworld.me. At it’s heart YourWorld is a social network devoted to consolidating all of your social networks in one place.
When you join you get a “room” which contains your photos, videos, checkins, article feeds and friends. You can add a number of social networks to your room giving you a snapshot of your online presence.
One of the most exciting things about YourWorld is that was such a large project that the scope evolved over time. Most projects are so rigid that there is very little room for experimentation. Keith France, CEO was such a great collaborator, encouraging experimentation and the incorporation of new ideas every step of the way.
Brian Miller came up with a really simple and highly functional design as the concept for the site can sometimes be a bit confusing. Dean Yeager created stunning 3D renders giving users the sense they were in a real space.
The coding on this project presented some interesting challenges as we chose Drupal as the backend. The choice to use Drupal made sense because it is a highly configurable, highly robust CMS that allows you to build almost any type of application on top of its core. While normally Drupal is sighted for having many turn-key modules making management easier, most of the code for YourWorld was custom written for the application in order to create a more efficient backend and a more scalable platform.
